PDAs for World Languages & ESL
Ways to Use PDAs in Your World Languages & ESL Classroom
In a World Language or ESL class, middle and high school students can use the application PiCoMap to create a character analysis diagram, ideas for writing, and concept map of colors, shapes or ideas. This software allows students to represent ideas as well as vocabulary. This information can be shared with peers in small group formats or turned in to the teacher via beaming.
As a way to gauge or assess high school students’ understanding of a lesson, ask three questions and have students answer them and beam them in before they leave class.
In the World Language classroom, high school students can create a class dictionary by using the PDA to take notes of new vocabulary learned during class. Students can then beam the list to the teacher by the end of each class.
Encourage pair work with dialogue journals. Middle and high school students can have a written conversation by using the graffiti and beaming features of the PDAs. This authentic form of communication engages students and helps develop language skills.
When discussing a delicate topic, high school students can use the PDAs for writing their thoughts, feelings, and opinions on the topic. The PDA’s small screen keeps peers’ wandering eyes from seeing what is written. Students can then choose with whom to share their written work.
Introduce a new unit using the application PiCoMap. Middle and high school students can brainstorm ideas using this application. It can facilitate sharing of information using the beaming feature.
PDAs are a portable handheld device, which help students process information and communicate findings. High school students can use the PDAs to create interview questions, interview a peer or adult and record the responses. For assessment, students can beam their interview questions and responses to the teacher.
PDAs can be used in middle or high school small group activities using the jigsaw method. PDAs help students process information in their expert groups and communicate their information to the rest of the class. Each group is given a specific task or activity to accomplish in which they become the experts of that given task/activity. Then the groups are rearranged to form new groups that comprise of one expert from each of the original groups. Each expert waits his/her turn to share information and beams the text to the others.
When high school students are working in small research groups, the PDAs can be used to gather information and facilitate the sharing of information with group members by beaming gathered information to each other. Then students can share their rough drafts and receive peer input and editing using the beaming feature.
Create a shared story with the class by having elementary students add to the starter sentence via graffiti and beaming. In the end, the teacher can project the shared story using a document camera and students can illustrate the story using TealPntLte.
Use the PDAs on field trips that require middle and high school students to take notes and collect data for future discussions or projects. For example, if students go an art museum students can use the graffiti or built-in keyboard for note-taking and the eyemodule for picture-taking or short 20 second movie-making.
In a world language middle school class, divide the class up into teams and challenge students to write a sentence accurately and quickly and beam it to the teacher. The teacher can have his/her PDA projected using a document camera to display the correct sentences being beamed in.
